Why use File Compressor

  • Private and secure

Your image is sent over an encrypted connection to our server in Europe and stored under a random ID. It is never shared with third parties or used to train AI. Download links expire after 60 minutes; files are then deleted automatically, normally within 75 minutes. Read the privacy policy

  • Honest results

Choose a quality preset or a target size. The result shows the exact size before and after, and says so if a file can't get any smaller.

  • Free, no sign-up

File Compressor is free with no account, no watermark and no ads. It works in any modern browser on phone or desktop.

In short

Compress JPEG re-encodes JPG files with an optimized JPEG encoder at the quality you choose (presets map to quality 85, 75 and 60). With a target size, it binary-searches the highest quality that fits and only reduces dimensions if needed. The output is always a standard JPG that opens everywhere.

How to use it

  1. Choose a .jpg or .jpeg file.
  2. Pick a preset, or turn on Target size.
  3. Select Compress file.
  4. Download the smaller JPG.

Why JPG files get so large

Phone cameras save JPGs at very high quality and resolution, so a single photo is often 3–8 MB. Most of that detail can't be seen on a screen. Re-encoding at a sensible quality removes data you won't notice.

Repeated compression

Each JPEG re-encode loses a little detail. Start from the original photo when you can, and pick the preset once rather than compressing the same file repeatedly.

Questions

Is JPG the same as JPEG?

Yes. They're two file extensions for the same format.

What quality number does each preset use?

High quality uses 85, Balanced 75 and Smaller file 60, on a 1–100 scale with an optimized encoder.

Can I get an exact size like 200 KB?

Yes. Turn on Target size and enter your limit. You'll see whether it was met.
