Why use File Compressor

  • Private and secure

Your image is sent over an encrypted connection to our server in Europe and stored under a random ID. It is never shared with third parties or used to train AI. Download links expire after 60 minutes; files are then deleted automatically, normally within 75 minutes. Read the privacy policy

  • Honest results

Choose a quality preset or a target size. The result shows the exact size before and after, and says so if a file can't get any smaller.

  • Free, no sign-up

File Compressor is free with no account, no watermark and no ads. It works in any modern browser on phone or desktop.

In short

Choose a JPG or WebP image and File Compressor searches for the highest quality that stays at or under 100 KB (100,000 bytes). If quality alone isn't enough, it reduces the image's dimensions in steps. The result shows the exact size and says plainly if the limit couldn't be met.

How to use it

  1. Choose or drop a JPG or WebP image.
  2. Leave the target at 100 KB, or change it if your form uses a different limit.
  3. Select Compress file and wait a few seconds.
  4. Check the result size and the Target met badge, then download.

Where a 100 KB limit comes up

Many government, exam and job-application portals cap photos and signature scans at 100 KB or even less. A modern phone photo is often 30–60 times larger, so a quality change alone isn't enough; the image usually has to be resized as well.

How the target is reached

The tool first tries quality settings from high to low at the original size. If even the lowest acceptable quality is too large, it reduces the dimensions step by step and tries again, keeping the best-looking result that fits.

Tips for a better result

  • Crop away empty background in your photo app first. Fewer pixels leave more room for quality.
  • For ID photos, a 600–800 px wide image is usually plenty for a 100 KB limit.

Questions

Will my image definitely end up under 100 KB?

Usually, but not always. Very large or detailed images may not fit without becoming too small. If the limit can't be met, you get the smallest valid result and an Above target label, never a false "met".

Can I use this for PNG files?

Not for a size target. PNG compression is lossless, so it can't be steered to an exact size. Use Compress PNG, or convert the image to JPG first if a photo is stored as PNG.

Does KB here mean 1,000 or 1,024 bytes?

1 KB = 1,000 bytes, which is how most upload forms count. The tool shows the exact byte count so you can compare with stricter limits.
